Kurt off to UBS Finance Academy

Kurt Lane, a Year 11 PSC student, has recently found out that he has been invited to attend the UBS Finance Academy 2007 which will be run at Macquarie University in July this year.

The objective of the Academy is to provide leadership in investment banking education with a particular focus on senior secondary school students. The students are given the opportunity to explore and learn about a wide range of career opportunities in finance. This year 50 students have been chosen from public schools in ACT, NSW and Victoria. The program is a residential course that will be held in NSW at Dunmore Lang College, Macquarie University. The course is a mix of theory, industry exposure, field visits, syndicate work and fun. A key learning tool is the finance sector case study.

For the students there is a chance to explore a previously unknown career opportunity and develop new relationships with their peer group from other schools. Well done Kurt.

VCE Media Luncheon with Film-maker Peter Corbett

On Wednesday, 1 August, 2007, Portland Secondary College VCE Media students were presented with a wonderful opportunity to luncheon with local film maker, Peter Corbett and his wife Karen at Kokopelli Café, Portland. Peter is a very determined film director who was willing to give up his time to tell us about his film and documentary making experiences and to provide us with a first hand insight about the global and Australian film industry. Over coffee and cake, we learnt about his work experiences in Europe and America and his debut movie ‘The Long Road Home’; a documentary about Vietnam. He also shared some much needed advice about documentary making techniques and even brought along his very heavy and expensive professional camera. It was a very inspiring afternoon – Grace Warren, VCE Media Student
